1909 "silver" Jamacian Penny - Idea's

moose59 Pillar of the Community United States 732 Posts	Posted 12/06/2019 6:03 pm I went to a local coin shop to day and purchased some coins. One of them was this 1909 "silver" penny. Now a regular penny from Jamaica is copper/nickel, weighs 8.1g and is 30.9mm. The one I purchased is 9.3g and 30mm. Not a huge difference but enough. Report this Post to the Staff

sel_69l Bedrock of the Community Australia 21788 Posts	Posted 12/07/2019 07:28 am I feel reasonably confident that this coin has not been plated. The extra mass of 1.2 grams is much more than be accounted for, with plating. I would also find it reasonably difficult to explain why a white metal alloy coin should be plated with a white metal. I would expect that XRF testing would reveal a standard alloy of 75% copper, 25% nickel for this coin. Weight needs to be re confirmed on a different accurate mass balance. If correct, I suspect that a wrong planchet was fed into the coining press. This happenstance is not unique; it happened (rarely), when The Royal Mint was executing coin orders for many countries around the British Empire. It still happens occasionally, although less often. Agree that 15% difference in mass, if correct, is way too much for plating, but is exactly right for the difference between cupronickel alloy and silver.
