Hi all,

This coin / medallion has been in my oddments box for some time. It bears a striking resemblance to a Lokris stater, featuring Persephone / Demeter on the obverse, and Ajax on the reverse. It is 25mm in diameter, and weighs 12.5g. It is most likely a reproduction. What do the members think?

Jim

I agree it does appear to be a modern reproduction.

A match from the fake reports.

Note to the left of Ajax's legs the same mark/stamp that appears to the right of the legs on on the coin above - maybe the proud maker's signature?

Double edge at 4 o'clock (rev.) raises suspicions.
Pressure die cast fake in good silver?

Zinc die casting for toys has been around for many decades,
maybe has been used for the production of this coin.

Thanks to Bob L for the sleuthing for the fake report.

Thanks for the replies all, and thank you for the welcome Coinfrog.

The coin didn't feel right in the hand, and Bob L's post shows without a shadow of doubt that it is indeed some form of modern replica, or fake. A nice bit of sleuthing for sure Bob L.

It does look like a signature impressed into the coin, and I've attached a closer view of it.

Cheers, Jim
