That's also what I've read but wouldn't the edges be more flat? They seem thin and stick off pretty far from the flat of the coin. Its does feel like the normal material for a penny either.

So, this made me look at the Dryer Coin thread. Which was very very good.

Unfortunately this left me with some questions about this coin. The examples shown all had very rough edges. This one appears to be uniform and smooth. Exactly opposite of the "traditional" Dryer Coin.

I AM an Engineer......when something is outside of the norm, we usually do not ascribe to it a known process until and unless it can be shown to be a member of that process. I'd like to see known and verified Dryer Coins that have this uniformity before I think we can say it is a member of this class.

jmkendall what else could it possibly be? Like I had mentioned before it does not appear nor feel like the same material used in making the average penny.

Photo #2 looks to me like another possibility is that some other material has been crimped around the coin.

If you can measure the mass of the coin to the nearest 0.1 g, this might confirm.

If your coin is dated after 1982, its mass should be 2.5 g. If it is greater, then someone has added a ring around the coin.

By the colour, it looks like it is encased in some sort of a bezel,
possibly for a piece of jewellery.

Never thought it might have a "frame" around it. Weight would be very helpful. Also check it with a magnet.

I would be in the bezel column since it does not look like the edges are encroaching on the devices enough for the edge to be rolled that far?

Just the edge rolling over. If left in the dryer a lot longer, the edge would be expanded even more. My image host is giving me grief right now. BRB

Note how the metal folds over the rim and edge of the devices? Same on the OP's coin also.

(Bezel doesn't roll over the rim and show the edges of devices on a small bezel)
