I need help with this coin in that I really cannot find a KM# for this date and type with a D mint mark. Am I just somehow missing it or has it been inadvertently omitted from the most recent edition. Please pardon the bad scans. For whatever reason the reverse looks far more worn in the scan than it really is. Any help would be appreciated!

It's in my Krause (3rd ed. 2002 p.203), KM# 600.5. It's listed with the Republic coins, rather than the monarchy coins.

Sap- ah now I see it. It is there in the 4th edition as well. It really does seem that the Krause books are rather unorganized when it comes to the section on French coins.

This coin is from a transition era between the Ancien Regime and the Republic. After the French revolution in 1789 the Ancien Regime was abolished but the king stayed in office.Only... he had to resign his divine right to reign: after 1789 he reigned as a sort of first citizen. You can find this on the coin: instead of Dei Gratia Franciae (et Navarrae) Rex (by the grace of God king of France and Navarre)in Latin (a language for the nobility), the coin now shows the legends: Roi des François (king of the French)in French, language of the people. It shows also the legends: La Nation, La Loi, Le Roi (Nation, Law, King), with the king being put after the nation and the law. This made Louis XVI a constitutional king. This situation ended in 1792, when the king was beheaded.

This coin shows other symbols of the revolution: the fasces with the Phrygian cap, and also the date following the Revolutionary calender : l'an 4 de la liberte (year 4 of liberty)
