It is, as you say, a French 5 centime. Listed in the catalogues as KM# 842; example on WCG. Five centime coins were issued with this design from 1898 up to the start of WWI, and again for a couple of years after the war ended.

diameter 25 mm , 5 g bronze
rare years for this type : 1897, 1898 and especially 1921 very hard to find ! (one of the most expensive French coins)

Mine isn't quite that good quality, but it's still decent (especially since I only spent 25 cents on it )

I've been lucky, every coin I have has been bought for 25 cents or less
