Hello,

I'm really interested in Proof sets and I was wondering if single coins can be found in Proof condition, specifically Silver Dollars.

Thanks,
Rich

What kind of silver dollars? Any proof dollars made of 90% silver cost many thousands of dollars. There was only one year of proofs for the Peace dollar and it is a six figure coin. Many Morgans are available in proof but the mintages for each year were less than 1000. Proof Trade and Seated Liberty dollars are available but very rare. Proofs from the early 20th century and 19th century were typically sold as singles, not in sets(although some sets were sold), and the lower denomination coins had higher mintages than the larger denominations.

BTW, proof is not a condition of the coin- it is the particular way it was struck. Once a proof, always a proof regardless of how the coin has been treated.

People can and do break apart proof sets. I have done this and moved all of the proof coins into their respective Dansco album.

Sometimes a proof coin is worth more by itself than it is as part of a proof set. This is because people may only collect one series (like quarters) but do not want to worry about liquidating the unwanted coins from the set; they are willing to pay extra for the one coin they want.

I will also say that proof singles are readily available at coins shows.

Single proofs are very common at coin shows. One dealer at a coin show I go to each month specializes in loose proofs and uncircs. Actually they, a man and his wife, order massive amounts of proof sets, break them up, place in 2x2's and sell at the coin shows. their table is one of the busiest. For Uncircs, they simply have a source at some banks where they get rolls of uncirc coins, place in 2x2's and sell as MS coins. I was talking to them several times and they said they usually only sell at one show since they usually sell out at that one and it takes time to restock.
