So I was just reading Variety Vista and came across RDVs. I honestly didn't know exactly what they were.

http://www.varietyvista.com/01b%20L...arieties.htm

I'm kind of confused by the list. Are the dates assigned to each RDV the "rare" varieties or are is the list just assigning each date to what RDV it's supposed to have?

Because I came across a 1973 cent that looks like it has the RDV-005, when the date is listed to have the RDV- 003?

An abbreviation for Reverse dies varieties. Your 1973 has the correct reverse die.

I understand that thank you, but what exactly is up with the list? Is the coin correct because I'm wrong and it is a RDV - 003?

Your coin is RDV-003.

The list is just all of the reverse designs known for each date and mintmark.
If the text is black, that's the normal design for the year/mintmark.
The rare ones are highlighted in red, blue, or pink.

When you look through that page:
http://www.varietyvista.com/01b%20L...arieties.htm
Which 'FG' is the largest? RDV-003.
That is what your coin has on it. Note it is almost the height of the whole steps area? That is what you have. For the shape on this one, it is the size that matters.
