I just picked up an 1883 IHC in UNC red brown with mint lustre present. Took pics but the didn't turn out well and will attempt again later. The cent has the doubling on the motto UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Very similar to the FS#1c- 009.5 for the 1887 in CherryPickers Guide. I purchased the coin when I recognized the doubling only later to check the guide and it is not listed. Doubling is very strong.

Is there additional sources for this kind of irregularity? Has anyone seen this before.

I do have an 1887 with the doubling in AU and the 1883 is more dominant. Any help would be appreciated. nlp

Be wary of any doubling on IHCs because they are prone to a phenomenon known as "Longacre doubling", check out this link for some pics of Longacre doubling and it also has a pic of an 1887 IHC doubled die http://hermes.csd.net/~coneca/conte...lyer-PDF.pdf

Checking Rick Snow's attribution guide or his online resource, I don't see a DDO listed for 1883.
Of course, a discovery piece is always possible, but Longacre doubling is very possible too--a pic of yours would help.
There's a good shot of LD in that link to compare to a true DDO, such as the 1887.
With LD, you'll never see serif separation, nor a directional offset such as seen on the 1887 Snow-1.

Just so others can compare, here's a bit better shot of the 1887 S-1 DDO, where I've noted serif separation.

Thanks for that link biochemist6. I believe it is the Longacre effect. Here are some better pics with the light source moved around for effect.

Check out these pics and see if you concur that the doubling is the Longacre effect. Thank you all for the informative help. nlp

That's a nice IHC! I can't tell either way from the size of the pics.
If you can do closeups, take one of the date area too...I'll check against known RPDs.

KurtS, I tried to get a better pic of the date but I cant seem to figure out if the camera can do any better than a macro shot. Zooming in with magnification seems to just blurr it unless there is a process one has to use. It is a Cannon SD790 1S with 10 mp. I think the weak link is the operator. nlp

nlp, if you have a 10 magnifying loop, that will work. use the macro setting, hold the loop over the lens with one hand and take the pic with the other. should come out pretty good. at least good enough to see.
