I am new to this place. I have been collecting coins since I was young and have some that were inherited as well as some that I just found. I have some from the 1800's up to present time; also have foreign coins mostly collected from traveling or given to me by my son when he was in the Army, and some just finding them on the ground.

Anyway, I was looking at some of my Jefferson nickels, and I didn't realize that I had an all black or dark brown 1973 Jefferson nickel, with no mintmark, assuming it was minted in Philadelphia. I tried to find out about it on the internet, and came across something called Black Beauty nickels, but the article only mentioned they were found in the 1950's and apparently minted in error in Philadelphia.

Could anyone tell me what I may have. I took a picture of it alongside a normal 1973 Jefferson nickel that I have. I don't know how to post pictures or if I am allowed to do it here.

If they are dark brown or actually black, they were probably found with a metal detector.

They are spendables.
