I created a web page that shows the quality comparison between several ways to take variety details images:

Full coin lens with teleconverter
Full coin lens cropped and downsized
Short bellows lens stopped-down
Microscope objective with focus stacking

Take a look and let me know what you think:

I added some more info and some crops to show the image quality differences better, plus a comparison table.

Ray happy new year. ray I purchased a box of photography goodies. one item in the box stood out. ray its a item made by canon company. I dug and dug until I found a little bite information. ray have you ever used a canon spacer. to add a set distance from your main lens. to a add on lens to help set the proper Magnification. this was the first time. I have ever heard of this. I am wondering have you ever used one of these spacer.

ray those are incredible photos very well done excellent.

Nice comparison. It looks like these images were taken with bargain lenses (except for the microscope). I wonder how much better could you get from a cropped full coin image with the macro varon (presumably stacked) at best aperture?

The 75mm and 35mm lenses were Tominons, not really bargain lenses, but not super expensive. Doing a similar thing with the 85MV would give a bit better result than with the 75mm, mainly because it can be optimized for 2x magnification at f4.5, where the Tominon needed to be stopped down to f5.6 for best performance. You may be right that stacking would be required, which would be sort of a compromise you would have to make for the higher quality.

rocky, is the "spacer" different from an extension tube? Would be good to see a pic of the thing.
