It's called a "broken post" form of die chip. Very common on '50s wheats.

Thanks for all the input everyone. Love finding the WHEATIES in circ. The 53 was found by my brother. The last 3 I've found in circulation was a 30, 40, then 50. In that order. I got a friend hooked on this addiction by dumping out his penny jar, and located a 1916 wheatie within the first 10 seconds of scrounging. While showing it to him, I said "This penny is over 100 years old." "Imagine the loaf of bread and bottle of milk that was purchased with it many moons ago."

Wheaties are increasingly difficult to find in circulation these day. I search about a box of cents a week, and if I find 9 or 10 Wheaties per box I consider myself lucky. Good going on this one!
