Hi everyone,
I hope I am posting this in the right section, as I am new to your community. I recently received a USAF Thunderbird coin as a gift, and can not find out anything about it. I have searched the web, and ebay and have not found one similar to this coin. The back of the coin has the US Air Force and Thunderbird logo with the Eagle and Star in the middle, but the front of the coin has the word SOLOS on the top and GO CALYPSO! on the bottom of the coin. With 2 planes in the middle of the coin. Has anyone heard of this coin or seen one, is it worth anything?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

It sounds like you have a what is known as a military challenge coin(which is not a coin at all, just a medallion). The Calypso maneuver is one of the most famous Thunderbird stunts and I have seen it first-hand on many occasions.

Like most challenge coins, it is not really something of value(unless the challenge coin is of your unit) and is meant as more of a souvenir piece.

Ah yes, I've seen my fair share of "Thunderbird" and "Blue Angel" shows. They are something very cool to see.

I've been wanting to start a topic on millitary challenge coins but just never have. My father, who has been in the service for nearing 22 years (but only really started getting into these coins around ten years ago) has lots of these. He even has them in a wicked cool display case my mother got for him for christmas one year. They are by far the raddest medals I've ever seen. I like them a lot.

It is kind of a custom in the military community to exchange these coins. Usually each squdran has its own coin with a number of squardrans in a unit, and then the unit has its own coin. And then sometimes the squadran and unit commanders have their own personal coins made which they distribute usually to people who deserve some sort of merit. My father has been a squadran commander three times, so he has obtained and been personally given several of these coins. I should probably post pictures.
