Hello. Can someone help me idendify this coin. It is too worn down for me to make out what it says. It is 30mm diameter, 8.89g, has a specific gravity of approx 8.70 and is only slightly magnetic. Thank you.

It is a penny of Great Britain. It should be of copper/ bronze and not magnetic at all, but it looks like it may have a bit of plating of something magnetic like Nickel.

Oriole. Thank you. I figured that if it had plating, that it would have worn off because of how worn down it is and you would be able to the yellowish orange colour.

I've got an 1862. I'll hold a magnet up to it tomorrow and see what happens. It shouldn't stick.

I can't find any reference to a silver coloured one. Do you suppose someone plated it with nickel making it slightly magnetic?

Yes - probably plated recently and long after it became so worn down. This is a regular trick amongst unscrupulous ebay sellers to persuade people to part with much more money than the coin is worth!
