Hello,
So before Christmas I was at my bank (30+ year customer). I asked if they entertain ordering boxes of coins. They said sure and told me I can call and ask for what branch I could pick them up from. So I did so. The teller even asked for my cell and said she would text me when they were in.
Well about a week goes by when they should have been and I called. Got a run around and they wouldn't transfer to the specfic branch but after some discussion I stopped by.
Now I was going to just take an equivalent of half's (500) in an open box and go. But then I started talking to the person helping me and come to find out it seems there are managers or other employees that open all the rolls themselves and take what they want then put the rest back. At that point I told them I don't any unless it is sealed from the feds.
What I don't understand is bank managers getting paid to do their own coin roll hinting for their personal benefit. This is a credit union BTW. I am thinking about sending a letter to the president to tell him if your managers have time to coin roll hunt through your vaults maybe you have more manager then you need and to start concentrating on the customers and not their own personal interest.
It just made me mad.
Thanks, rant off,
Dyno

I would be very careful about sending such a letter, especially since the information is second hand.

That's a big problem. A letter is a big way to show you need action taken. If not, tell them you will take your business somewhere else... end of story.

I was treating them as if they are doing me a favor ordering the boxes. Now that I think about it this is a perfectly reasonable service they should be providing me without fail nor hassle. If bank personal go through stock prior then its a disservice. Ill hold of on the letter because in the end its better the relations improve not escalate but I am the customer and my bank should be providing me the service of a sealed box.
The person that I talked to assured me that Wednesday they will have a sealed box for me. So I will see how that goes. I will inspect it carefully however.
What I still don't get is how bank personal can get away with this. I would be docking their pay for time spent and then after two warning out the door your fired. And with a bank and a vault I would be sure that only those on the clock and with reason even have access to it. So I don't care if these staff are doing it off the clock, if they are off the clock they have no business in the vault. And if they are on the clock they have no business using it for personal endeavors period.
Every place I ever worked the stock was for customers, NOT YOU EMPLOYEE!! Maybe I should look into a bank manager job and spend all my time coin roll hunting till I get fired.
Can yo imagine being a bank manger and its time to close and clean out the vault as they are buying a new one and fine old boxes or morgans or peace and the top dog says I'll take care of the staff just ignore the man behind the curtain.

That is not good what the bank manager is doing; if a customer wants sealed boxes, then they should get sealed boxes. Customers should always come first.

Are there other options to get boxes from the federal reserve? And I am making an assumption that the fed res is where they all come from.

Dynotech, how much over face value would you pay per box to get them ordered from your bank? If the rate is 5% or more I'd be a little upset about them 'fishing' the goods. If they are supplying you stuff for free then I don't understand the problem.

atticguy That's ridiculous. As a long standing member of a bank (and doing significant business) ordering boxes(for whatever purpose) should never have a premium on it. Its not like I can demand specific dates or mint marks. All I ask for is a box that the credit union seems to allow employees to go through before they are passed to customers which to be blunt is . I am paying for market currency and for what ever reason I should be able to expect when I order a box it remain sealed when I pick it up.

I feel It's a worthy Rant that a bank manager should not be opening rolls picking out what he wants and filling them backup with other non collectible coins . That's not his job .

Its not just a particular manager either, its multiple staff at multiple locations from what I was told. We will see what happens Wednesday.

You may be expecting too much. A bank is not a credit union, where employees/members are part owners, and a CU tends to make it's own rules at times. If a bank or CU orders coin, they are doing you a favor not a service. Yes you are correct that your coin is not coming from the Fed Reserve but from a local courier in most cases. Raising a stink is the fastest way to get cut off from your bank or CU as they can and will close your account if you push it. There are so many banks to pick and choose from, move on.

You ordered $500 worth of half dollars. You got $500 worth of half dollars. You don't get to tell them what to do with them, especially if you are getting these boxes without charge.
It sucks, but it's not their job to be your personal coin store, and you will not have a good outcome by making a fuss about it. I would open an account somewhere else instead.

How do you know the employees are looking through the coins while on the clock?
Maybe they are buying the coins and taking them home (just like you). Maybe they are looking during their lunch break.
Maybe you should get a job in a bank/credit union.

Not a hill I would die on and most other hills are not worth defending.
I would be thankful for the good times I had and move on.
