My 1875 is truly sad, but pleasingly a lot of you are showing more humble coins now in the end of Morgan dollar madness. This worn to death German small change is the best I can do.   1875 5 Pfennig - not sure of mint due to wear. The other item is a badly mutilated UK Halfpenny   90% of my collection is 20th century I guess. We really are grabbing up stragglers now. I have a few coins of the 1860s, but after that, its years without a single coin. I have a few decent early 19th century coins though. |

Beautifully toned prooflike gilt silver token/medalet that was apparently issued in 1875 to commemorate the death of Carl Knorr (of the soup fame) -- with original box. Little is known on these issues, but they were probably issued as Gedenkmünzen (memorial/remembrance coins.) In size it is the same as a regular 1/2 Gulden of the era, i.e. 24mm, but the weight is lighter by about 0.6-0.8g due to a higher fineness silver, perhaps, or some other reason. KM does list it as Tn-X11 under Württemberg. Reverse is same as any 1/2 Gulden of the 1830s-1840s era -- Knorr opened his first store in 1838, hence the 1838 date. Fascinating selection already - never seen a 'Knorr' coin before!  My UK selection starts with a real lowball penny, in circulation for 95 years before it was rescued just in time from the melting pot:  Here's the scarce Heaton Mint variety - believe it or not, this coin is a recent upgrade (my previous 1875H penny was not only worn but also had TWO holes punched in it!):  Shilling with Die Number 53:  Florin:  Halfcrown - my best coin of the year!
