Dombes 1665, 1/12 ecu.



The sovereign principality of Dombes, located just outside Lyon in France, was in 1665 ruled by the princess Anne-Marie-Louise d'Orleans, cousin of the French king Louis XIV. She was known as La Grande Mademoiselle, since by inheritance she was also princess, duchess and countess of half a dozen other feudal states in France.

A 1/12 ecu weighs just 2.3 g, but despite its small size it was popular in the Levant and used extensively as a trade coin during the 17th century. According to some sources, it was used for adornment by the women of the Orient. Whatever the cause, due to its popularity, the original French royal 1/12 ecu (which I will show in a few days) lent its design to this and many other feudal "copies." That the coat of arms of the house of Orleans - used on this Dombes coin - is almost identical to the coat of arms of France was convenient. (The only difference is the label* above the fleur-de-lis.) The Dombes "copy" with the nice princess portrait, was in turn copied more or less directly by several Italian city states, with portrait, (similar) coat of arms and all, with time often with inferior silver content. The Italians called these coins luigino ("Little Louis"), after the original French coins portraying Louis XIV. The Loano coin shown by @pepactonius yesterday is an example.

* A label (or lambel) is in French heraldics used to indicate a cadet branch of a noble house. Anne's father, Gaston d'Orleans, was the third son of the French king Henry IV of house Bourbon. Bourbon's coat of arms (which also served as arms of France under the Bourbon kings) uses the fleur-de-lis.
Originally a label was a (decorative) add-on to the armorial carried by a knight's horse. A new term for me in this heraldic sense, had to look it up .
