Look at the bright side... We went from Waiting On 1460 to Waiting On 1451. Not a bad jump!

Here is an undated grossetto of the Republic of Venice struck under doge Francesco Foscari.

The initials m B to the left and right of the figures on the reverse belong to Marco Barbarigo, who was a mint official in 1450.

As best I can tell, yes.
He was appointed in May of 1450.
Niccolo Foscarini (initials Nf) was appointed in July, 1450.

Their initials appear on the same types (grossettos and soldinos), so I think they served sequentially. I posted that question a couple of years ago on numista and was told this is the case (by an Italian collector who is the "referee" for parts of Italy).

The system in Florence is more clear-cut, where it is known that there were different officials for the silver and the gold coins, and they served four month terms.

It seems in Venice it was less regular. There were also occasional times when the mint official serves twice under the same doge, so it would be impossible to date the coin.

That sounds good enough for me. If everyone else agrees, we can move back with this satisfying 1450. I would like to see what Spence has though.

That will satisfy the 1450/854. Dropping back a year to 1449/853.

FWIW while we are currently waiting for 1449 we can still post 1450 coins if we have any. In particular, when Spence shows up he can post both 1450 and 1449.

I also hope he's fine!

Yep sorry was off the grid for a little while, but I'm back now. I'll get something posted here (later) in the morning.

As promised, here is my Groschen from the German Archbishopric of Cologne dated 1450 AD. It was minted at Riehl and I have attributed it as Levinson I-90.
