What a ride it has been though @ttk. I'm still amazed that we were able to make it this far back. Teamwork!

It is the biggest gain between editions. Nearly a full century!

How Far Back Can We Go? Fifth Edition! Ended At 1461 Waiting On 1460 C. E. (A. H. 864)
How Far Back Can We Go? Fourth Edition! Ended At 1461 Waiting On 1460 C. E. (A. H. 864)
How Far Back Can We Go? Third Edition! Ended At 1487 Waiting On 1486
How Far Back Can We Go? Second Edition! Ended At 1492 Waiting On 1491
How Far Back Can We Go? Ended At 1492 Waiting On 1491

Yes Spence, it has been a ride indeed. and yes, teamwork!
It should be interesting to how far the 7th will chip away at the 14th century. Well done to all who contributed.

oh and well done jbuck, for trying to keep us on the straight and narrow!

Back in December, I mentioned that we've progressed further in one year than in the nine years before that. I decided to figure out if that was still true.

The answer is... technically yes, as of when I'm writing this, but it wouldn't be the case by the time this thread closes.

As of exactly a year ago, August 7th, 2023, (just before) 10 AM forum time, we were still stuck at 1433 waiting for 1432.
(The 1432 coin was finally posted about eight hours later, and was followed by a very slow debate over whether it actually qualified; eventually it was decided that it did, and we progressed to 1431.)

Meanwhile, ten years ago, in August 2014, we were stuck at 1496 waiting for 1495.

It turns out that 1433-1368=65, while 1496-1433=63, so yes, as of 10 AM forum time, August 7th, 2024, we have (again/still) progressed further in the last year than in the previous nine years.

However, as of when this thread ends (in a few days, hopefully), the "as of one year ago" boundary date would be 1432, so both differences would be equal (at 64) and the literal inequality would not be literally true.

...I'm hoping that we'll beat that 64 in the 7th edition, i.e. get at least as far as 1304 by August 2025. Not sure how realistic that is!

It'll be interesting to try and find out what's the largest forward progress within a one-year period (I'm guessing it would be in the early years of the 1st edition, but if we exclude that it's likely to be in the 6th somewhere - possibly exactly the last year).

Waiting to see if we get a 1367 C. E. (A. H. 768)

NO! I didn't get one. But I did a bit of research, and they do exist. I am seeing one or two affordable AH768 dated coins come up in auctions each year:
https://www.numisbids.com/n.php?lot...lot&sid=8068
https://www.numisbids.com/n.php?lot...lot&sid=6364
https://www.numisbids.com/n.php?lot...lot&sid=5401
https://www.numisbids.com/n.php?lot...lot&sid=5137

As for dateable European coins, the only type I can find so far which is close is this one:

According to CNI (Vol. VII, p. 91), Venetian mintmaster Secondo Aventurado was appointed by doge Marco Corner on January 12 1367. Corner died on January 13, 1368. If it took just a few days to modify the dies to incorporate Aventurado's "sigile" S on the coins, then it would have been struck within a year of, say, January 15, 1367.

Given that an AH dated coin can straddle into two C.E. years, with the nod going to the year which contains the most AH days, I would have thought that this coin would be in a similar position, and I would be happy to vote yes to accept it, should it ever come up for display in
the 7th edition.

I checked MA Shops and there's only one hit and it's a miswritten date. Yeah I thought this would be a more common date than that...

There are three (I think) on Meshok but of course I have no idea if they deliver outside Russia. If I do end up visiting Moscow in the coming months I'll try to check if there's any in the markets.

[EDIT: to clarify, most hits for 768 are Charlemagne and most hits for 1367 are modern 1367 AH coins.]
