1949 a stunning gEF/AU halfcrown - sadly with a light verdigris stain on the obverse near the crown.   This is a gorgeous coin and one of my favourites. It wasn't cheap either - I paid $48 for it and a Fine one costs usually 50c - $1 - EF is catalogued however at $75! Edited by Princetane

As I showed German coins yesterday, I mentioned an earlier series dated 1949   These coins included the 10 and 50Pfg and had a different inscription. The waer on them suggests they did circulate after 1950. The inscription on the 50 is thicker more Art Decoey letters and the words translate to German (National?) Bank. The Deutschmark was introduced in June 1948 as part of the Marshall plan and remained a stable currency replacing the obselete Reichsmark, and Allied occupation currency. One story I ehard in my German History course at Uni, was every person was given 30 or 40 marks on its 1st day. 3 more years of dull cupronickel coins for me in 49 to 47 and then things improve as 46 backwards we get half silver or better coins. 3rd of 5th coins, my humble delights in amongst double sets of Canadian coins and every American coin mintmarked twice   Then again I can't wait to see all your Walkers guys - I just love those coins and that design!    Here are two 1949 British shilling coins - the coin on the left is an "English shilling" with a lion rampart over the crown. Coin on right is a "Scottish" shilling with a upright lion holding the cross of St Andrew on one shield and a thistle on the other. These designs were used through KGVI's era - yet you will see the inscription will lengthen as we go back to 1948. More details why tomorrow. Edited by Princetane

1949 United Kingdom farthing, halfpenny and penny:    The 1949 penny was considered something of a semi-key date, with a mintage figure of 14.3 million compared with the hundreds of millions issued each year from 1962-7. There was a surplus of pennies in the late 1940s and none were struck for circulation in the UK from 1950 to 1960 inclusive (the 1950 and 1951 pennies were for colonial use and the 1953 penny was only issued in sets with other coins, although some did escape into circulation). Many 1949 pennies were held in reserve by banks through the 1950s, and not released until required: it was not unusual to find specimens in circulation with traces of mint lustre right up to Decimalization in 1971. |

Couldn't agree more. I don't even have a 1949 British penny - yet I have plenty of the 1937 - 1940 and 1944 - 1948 ones, which saw fairly large numbers - a lot of peoples collections would end with a 48 too I guess. Especially here as no copper was issued in 1948, but pennies were plentiful through 1940 - 1965 except 1948 for pennies and 1943 and 1949 for halfpence. Here is a sixpence of 1949   NumisRob, were they also hiding these as well in the UK as quite a few of my 1949/51 British coins are gF to VF like this one rather than the VG - Fine of 1947/48 coins. They did the same thing with 1950 half crowns, most of the 1951 coins and 1952 3d's here, released in 1963 so many have lustre traces remain on VF coins. |
