My own 1949 NZ silver crown - EF but with stains and why I got it cheap ($10 or less).

This coin was issued for a proposed Royal Visit by King George VI in late 1949, which never eventuated due to his poor health and Princess Elizabeth could not fill in as Prince Philip was in the Navy stationed in Malta.

200,020 were issued and sold anyway. Unlike other post 1946 coins, it was minted in .500 Silver and is the last silver predecimal coin. They sold like hot cakes when released on November 30th 1949. Most survive in at least VF condition.

Much of our silver is blackened like this for two reasons.

1. New Zealand, particularly the northern bit where I am has a subtropical humid climate - not good for silver coinage.

2. It was half copper and the copper can leach through after almost no wear - giving a blackish or greenish tinge.

A set of postage stamps was also propsed and scrapped. A few of the 3d's and proofs came on the market and sold for thousands a couple of years ago.

Let's go around the world for 1949!

This year and the preceding year are special years for me. I am building a top end Mint set for 1949 but it's not done yet, unlike my 1948 set.

Another EF coin and a real stunner -

My 1947s will be less well preserved and then back to the SYLVER (Deliberately spelled wrong for laughs)

More coins coming - took a mountain of shots for 1940s coins today.

The British halfcrown is definitely a bit more worn.
Interesting you notice now the coin has "Ind Imp" in the inscription.

This is because India became Independent on Aug 15 1947 and King George lost his role as Emperor. Whereas New Zealand got rid of the word Emperor quickly, the Brits were behind the 8 ball and cheekily kept it on 1948 coins - only dropping it in 1949.

1948 was a high mintage year for most British coins, especially the higher value ones, as large numbers of cupro-nickel coins were needed to replace the pre-1947 silver alloy coins.
