My first 1947 coins







The 1947 Halfcrown and Florin of New Zealand. The first year of the cupronickel coinage. Numbers minted in 1947 were much lower than 1948/50 and the goal was initially to introduce cupronickel in amongst the silver. Full replacement was only expected by 1950, however silver coins survived through to decimalisation as the silver value never exceeded face value in this period.

A silver halfcrown on average had 1/3 of silver in it and cost 3d to make. A cupronickel one on the other hand cost 2d to make and the metal cost barely a penny!

They succeeded in the coins being the same size and weight as silver and the main difference is the reeding is much finer on the edges.

These two are both VF quality and the best you can get without paying big dollars.

You may notice the inscription is now George VI King Emperor, the only Cupronickel year with this one.

My second 1947 coin is an Australian Florin





The Australians dropped from Sterling Silver to .500 silver in 1946, so these are considered base silver over there.

Like most Australian silver, it is incredibly worn. This one is borderline VG and some may put it in the high Good categories (US G6 - VG7).

I only paid melt for it - This is my last Florin from them.

Just one more coin for 47 from me, but I have 5 for 1946 though.
