Love your Sarawak - NumisRob! Another 1934 coin from me!   1934 Fiji Sixpence condition VF This was the first year Fiji got its own coinage and 5 denominations were released including cupro nickel Pennies and Halfpence with holes in them for easy cartage and use by natives who generally did not have pockets on their loincloths and sulus (Those pleated white dress things they wear). And also .500 Silver Sixpences, Shillings and Florins. A series of banknotes was also released with denominations of 5/-, 10/-, £1 and £5. In 1936 I showed a Florin, 1935 a Shilling and now a sixpence - we now say bye bye to Fiji. Before 1934, they used Australian and British coinage. Edited by Princetane

As we approach the milestone...
How far back did we get by "Page 100" in each edition?
1st - 1522 (waiting for 1521)*
2nd - 1899
3rd - 1880
4th - 1916
5th - 1904
6th - 1934 (or 1933)
* The was no "one year per day" rule for 1st edition. Only one coin per year allowed, so it went by a lot faster!

Well if it helps JBuck.
I photographed my 1926 - 1930 coins before and I only have 1 coin for 1926, so at least from me things will thin out. I only have 2 large years left, 1916 and 1917 - then it will be one to three coins at most.
I have few for 1933, but only 2 coins for 1932 and so on.
Also deeper analysis of the pages shows the following years
Top of page 25 - 1969
Page 50 - 1950
Page 75 - 1941
If anything we blitzed back through the first 50 years very quickly, but the mid 20th century period is a popular and affordable one with many affordable and beautiful silver pieces.
Also in 1936 there were at least 3 people posting every American silver half dollar they had which swallowed up 5 pages alone.
I expect us to be back before 1900 by Page 150 and back to about 1830 by Page 200 as American coins become rarer and so do many world coins.

My final 1934 coin. Another Palestine - this time a five mils   I have no idea why they would hole these coins - as they had lower value coins not holed and higher value ones ditto. My guess is one of two reasons - One for Nomads like the Bedouins, but most users of Palestinian coins were Arabs who wore heavy clothing and European Jewish migrants on the Moshavas, Aliyaahs and living in new towns. The other is that it was cheaper and used less metal and the fact 5 mils was worth barely a penny in Sterling value. |
