I have a relatively low grade (maybe VG) 1865 Newfoundland 1 cent that is missing the '5' in the date. It's just not there - the surface is smooth and uninterrupted. It's quite clear that the number didn't just get rubbed off at some point. There are no other Newf 1cents from the 1860s so it has to be from that year.

I'm wondering whether this is interesting or rare?

Also, how might this have happened - I'm assuming some kind of defect in the die or striking process....?

Sorry but I'm not set up for taking decent enough photos to post but the coin is as described. Lots of wear plus a missing numeral!

Likely a Grease Filled Die. Interesting, but I don't know how common it is for this series. Generally Grease Filled Dies don't fetch much of a premium.

Animals pictured are flying foxes, also known as 'fruit bats' - vegetarian fruit and nectar eaters.

Not sure what sel is referring to but I agree with oriole that without
a picture to confirm, it is probably minor Grease Filled Die.
