These so-called "Pender fakes" have been fairly well known to serious exonumia collectors and dealers for going on twenty years now. Yet, they continue to surface and fool coin collectors/dealers and Civil War buffs. All examples I've personally examined were produced on pot metal coin replicas of Liberty Halves & Dollars that bear an "O" mint reverse. At first glance, the script gives these these pieces the appearance of having been engraved; this, suggesting a unique, one-of-a-kind item. In actuality, the entire reverse legend was stamped. Their design evidences the appearance of peripheral wear on the reverse, whereas the obverses look complete but worn. Adding to this deception, the names and regiments given are original; this, as do the holes.
The coin did sell. The seller gave no hint that this was a fake, so some gullible buyer made a huge mistake. The article you referenced addressed this fake coin exactly. Thank you ExoGuy, this was an interesting read.
