I just purchased this ANACS graded AU-55 dime in a Great Collections auction for less than the greysheet.

Would you keep it? At AU-55, ANA grading standards indicate "Most of the mint luster remains." In hand this coin looks too bright...no luster here right? I think the strike is above average for sure.

From GC photos, it appears there were plenty of hairlines on the coin or the holder, if its on the holder. I'd rather crack it out and put it into my Dansco album, if its on the coin, then it may have been cleaned from way past?

The price is pretty good for the coin anyhow.

Edit: the photos above make it hard to depict how the actual coin looks like on hand, not the same coin?

The GC pics aren't very flattering for sure.

Yes macmercury, same coin. I think those hairlines are on the coin itself and not the holder, and can be seen at a specific angle. So maybe it was lightly cleaned in the way past as you suggest. Here are additional photos that may help.

Though not evident in the photos, I was generally expecting to see some luster on this coin as I was under the impression this would be required at AU-55. I know sometimes luster is challenging to capture in 2-D photos. The strike is great, the price was good, but...

I'm a FSB person and the first photo did show almost FSB. Not a bad price for that grade.

Ok, I've decided to return this coin. Thankfully Great Collections allows 1 return per month.

I can't deal with zero luster on a professionally graded AU-55. Great strike, but when I pay 880 times face value for a coin like this, it's gotta have at least some original luster intact. The strike is really great, and almost full bands too...but in the end, no luster no likey.

Grading with ANACS is a hit and miss for older slabs, but I think they are tighter now than before. I just wish they can improve the quality of the slab, helps to bump up their reputation.
