Hi All,

I am still doing my research on British coins in the middle ages.

I have found a good dealer in OZ who stocks them.

As I am still new this area I though I would ask, what a good buying price is for a:
King Henry the 8th - groat - with great detail.

He is asking $350au.

Any help would be appreciated.

My reference books are a bit old and prices may have changed. According to my 1993 reference, common types of Henry VIII groats go for about US$150 (AU$200) to US$250 (AU$330) in VF. Assuming that prices haven't changed (and this is likely a bad assumption), if the coin is EF or better, it sounds like a good price.

It would have been a good vf. I think by what you say heather this still might not be a bad buy.

It might be good. Prices could have changed since 1993, and I doubt the value would have gone down. Worst case, it is a marginal buy, and since these coins don't appear all the time, it might be worth grabbing a nice one even if it is priced a little high. But chances are, the price has gone up a bit, so I'd probably go for it if you really want it and if you're sure it isn't fake.

Perhaps someone else will have more current information on the value of these coins.

Can I ask a potentially silly question.

Are there many fakes from this era in britian to be worried about?

Well, yes, quite a few since many collectors collect these.

I once saw it in Thailand, selling for 80 bhat, around $6!

according to Coincrafts 1999 Standard Catalogue - English & UK Coins 1066 to Date:

quote:
Most Henry VIII gorats are fairly common. The first and second coinages, being made of good quality silver, are more attractive and usually obtainable unclipped with full legible legends on round flans in Fine condition, although VF examples are not uncommon; EF examples also exist and are extremely desirable.

The prices listed range from £35-150 in VG to £140-1200 in VF.

Bear in mind, this information is based on the much stricter British grading standards, NOT on US grading standards. (I am not sure what standards are used in Australia)
