Here is a good example what happens to them Z-cents after ya leave em in vinegar to long. I had to give it a try. (No nice coins or animals where damaged in this test).LOL

Wow...dramatic! Perhaps a chemist here can explain what happened--galvanic reaction and the zinc going into solution?

Vinegar contains acetic acid. The acid reacts with the cent to form copper acetate, stripping it from the surface.
