To preface: I am not in the military, nor do I claim to be. This is simply a username!

Now, on to my Morgan dollars. I don't have many, only 4 worth looking at for grading (fourth is in the mail on its way so I'll post photos later). I took lots of pictures of the three I have, probably too many, but I wanted to make sure all the details of the coins are visible to you guys!

Coin #1
This is my best-looking Morgan I have right now. The luster is magnificent, and has a slightly golden, very pretty patina/toning on it. There's some pretty noticeable scratching (background I think it's called?) on the obverse, particularly on Morgan's face and to the left of her face. The reverse, though, is beautiful.

This is my toned, AU details Morgan. I'm wondering what this coin would go for, because I'm thinking of selling it. I bought it for $67, and the PCGS value states that a regular, non-details coin will go from $110-$130. How lowered is the value of a details coin when compared to non-details coin?

Coin #3
Regarding this New Orleans 1881 Morgan, I don't know whether there was just a bad strike on this coin (usual for New Orleans I've heard) or wear on Morgan's hairline and the eagle's breast. There is no luster worn off from those areas, but there's definitely less detail there than other coins of a similar condition. The luster on this coin is very nice, but it doesn't really compare to my first coin I've showed. This coin may have been cleaned, as it is very frosty and clean of any noticeable toning. I may be wrong though.

First coin is nice, low MS 61-63
Second coin is not AU, prob low XF, then takes a hit value wise as cleaned. You probably overpaid.
Third AU 58

Just some general advice. If you're buying coins because you like them and what them in your collection, great. If you're buying them thinking you can make a buck, be careful. People with decades of experience in this field have a hard time doing that. No matter where you would go to sell your coins, somebody is going to take a cut. Your local coin store will prob offer 50-60% of RedBook. Local or online auctioneer will take 10-25%, and there's no guarantee your coin would sell for as much as you want. ebay takes 10%. And if you are a new Ebayer, with little to no feedback, you won't get much for your coins.

Thank you Lancek! Why do you think my '81 O is AU-58? Do you think it is wear on the coin instead of a weak strike? If so, how does that happen with all the luster still present on those areas?

AU Coins still have luster. I've seen luster bomb AUs and dull lifeless lusterless MS coins.

I looked very, very closely at my '81 O and I looked at some more guides and I'd say you're correct about that AU grading. Thank you for your help!

Colonel's Morgans Update! My toned, 1879-P Morgan arrived today! The auction pictures didn't do it justice at all, and I mean AT ALL. I thought it was just heavily toned a tan/brown color, but under light it's got magnificent, vibrant orange, blue, and turquoise hues across the surface of the coin (and I'm 90% certain it's authentic, unlike my AU Details)! The edges of the coin contain the blue and turquoise hues while the fields around the eagle and the fields around Morgan's head, along with her cap and her neck, have beautiful orange toning!

Regarding the luster, it's very similar in intensity to my other 1879-P. The toning does get in the way to an extent, though.

The fields are amazing as well in terms of damage! There are a lot of darker color spots along the fields of the Obverse and Reverse, but these aren't from damage, simply from the toning. The only damage visible on the reverse is some horizontal scratching directly above the eagle's head and some slight vertical scratching between the wreath and the eagle's bottom left wing section.

On the obverse, there is slight vertical scratching on Morgan's cheek, in front of her eye, on her neck, and behind her cap. There is also slight horizontal scratching in front of Morgan's lips and under her neck. Otherwise, this coin is gorgeous! The best quality in terms of damage I have right now.

However, there is always a catch. This coin may have been very slightly circulated. There is some slight gray discoloration (original coin color) on her hair above her ear, on her eyebrow, and in a horizontal line from right below her eye over to her hairline. The eagle's breast is the only area on the reverse with this coloring, but I'm not positive that's just dark coloring from the toning or actual rubbing.

Do you guys think it's circulated? I'm thinking so, but I think it's only lightly so. This affects the coin value, but if this is the case, would the beautiful toning, luster, fields, and details increase the value?
