1953 Wheatback:

Does it look like possible doubling especially at the bottom of the 5?

What's up with the circle on the 5 also?

There seems to be at least 3 circles from what I can determine, a small one below the date, another smaller one near the 5 and 1 that looks like it directly effected the 5

What caused those?

Hi Chuckster...Looks like Machine Doubling to me and the circles are post-mint damage. Something struck the coin (nail/punch) and looks like it skipped across the obverse.

Regards,

The "circles" are just damage, the coin has been poked with something

It could be a dropped letter "o" but post mint damage is more likely.

I'm pretty sure I see Machine Doubling in the date (on all the numerals).

The circles look to be post mint damage.

I couldn't grade the coin higher than a 20

1. The circles are post-mint punch marks made with an awl or other sharp tool. There is no way this is anything else.

2. The 'doubling' could be minor Machine Doubling, but I don't see it. There is definitely no hub doubling going on.

3. The coin is a circulated 1953 cent with damage. No grade would be necessary, it would sell for the same thing if F12 or EF40....5 cents. Given that, however, just for the sake of discussion - the coin would grade professionally at the only service that would put it in a slab, ANACS, as VF details, net F12 damaged and corroded. Get the black stuff off of it and the 'corroded' part might drop. I personally wouldn't spend the time on it.

Thanks to all.

Agree,
I'm NOT spending any further time on this coin. File "13" candidate for sure!
