1911 D. There are a number of spots on this coin which I know will ding the grade when I send it to PCGS... but I'm crossing my fingers for somewhere between XF-40 to AU-50 grade. What do you think? Are the spots in critical areas? Also, I'm wondering whether the coin will even grade... the color is ever so slightly off. It's very slightly lighter and has just slightly more of a reddish color than my other Lincolns. Still, it looks like it could be a natural tone. I just can't tell with this coin.

That's a toughie... I don't know if I'd send that one in to be graded... I'm really thinking if you do it'll come back as an EF. There's just a little too much wear in spots other than the cheek and jaw for me to call it AU (temple and top of ear).

combine that with the residues (whatever they are) and I think you're gambling a little bit too much on this one.

First off, you need to remove the coin from the flip before you snap the pic.

The 11D's are usually softly struck. I think that's the case here. To be honest, I don't see any wear evident from these pictures. When die wear or strike softness comes into play it makes grading difficult....if you're grading for true wear and not technical grading. I think this coin is MS61-62. If it dropped to EF-AU by a TGP I'd be shocked....but then again I'm grading with pictures.

The obverse strikes me as EF but the reverse seems to be an AU. SO kind of hard to tell the exact grade when there is a bit of a difference in the amount of wear on each side.

Congrats! They must give plusses for the reverse, lends credibility to the soft strike theory. nlp

PCGS AU55. The obverse looks much stronger than XF40. Looks like slight wear in the hairline and cheek.
