I saw the Constantine II coin below, in an auction which seemed to attract a lot of attention. It was said to be very rare, but didn't say why. I did see that the obverse legend reads CONSTANTINVS IVN NBO C or CONSTANTINVF IVN NBO C instead of CONSTANTINVS IVN NOB C.

Searching for a coin with the "NBO C" legend ending didn't turn up anything. Is it a mistake in the die, or what is it that makes it so rare?

Anyone?

With the blundered legend, perhaps barbarous?

It is well made, but it can't be anything other than barbarous, with that blundered legend.

It appears to be an official issue, whoever cut the die made a mistake which didn't matter enough to cut a new die.

I agree with Ron....Looks too well made to be barbarous...
I think the occurrence of misspelt legends is not that uncommon...

My first ever ancient coin was of Licinius I with the actual emperors name misspelt.

I have a different example of this type of engraving error which also gives us NBO C.

Constantius Gallus - AE2

Obv:- D N CONSTANTIVS IVN NBO(sic) C, Bare headed draped & cuirassed bust right; A
Rev:- FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Emperor standing left on galley, holding Victory on globe and labarum; Victory behind, steering galley
Minted in Siscia (III | * // BSIS)
Reference:- RIC VIII Siscia 329 var (would be C but obverse legend error)

5.16 gms. 23.42 mm. 180 degrees.

I have gathered a few.

After seeing these other lovely coins, I wish I had bid on it now.

Another lesson learned.
