recently, a cleaned 1909-S VDB that re-toned quite nicely sold for over $800 on ebay. What do you guys think of buying cleaned coins that are semi or extremely rare, and waiting for them to tone nicely? It seems to me that you could get some awesome deals on semi key and key dates like this. And if you wait until there are fewer in like 50 years or so, (when they'll look better too) you could sell them for a nice profit. Also, do any of you know the best way to "encourage" coins to re-tone? I got a good deal on a 1909-S because it was cleaned, and the obverse is slightly toning but the reverse won't.

I think the results are very dependent on how severely the coins are cleaned. If a coin that you submit comes back as cleaned and many experienced collectors can't understand why then you may have a chance. Or just let it roam free in your pocket till it naturally wears down.
