I am looking to purchase a coin from the area of Brescia or Lombardy in Italy circa late 1500s or early 1600s. The reason for this particular search is that I collect antique guns and as part of my collection I like to display coins from the time period. Foe example I have an English flintlock pistol from 1710, so with it I display an English coin from the Queen Ann's reign. And so it goes...George II, George III, etc. I recently purchased a wheel-lock pistol made in Brescia around 1590-1600. So I am looking for coin from the general location and time frame. I checked ebay and a number of dealers I could find online, but nothing seems to make a match. Does anyone have any ideas of where I could be looking? Ideally I would like to buy an original from the area, but if that's not possible, maybe from one of the other Italian states from the time period. Any thoughts? |

I don't think Brescia issued coins as late as 1500 - a century earlier, they did.
From 1520, Brescia was under the rule of Venice so you might consider a Venetian coin.
Alternatively, you might consider a coin of Milan.
We don't see many medieval Italian coins, so whatever you acquire, please post a picture and description here.

Incidentally, you'll probably need to spend at least 130 C$ for a coin with readable legends.

On those years the 'Ducato di Milano' was under Spanish domination. You are looking for coins under regins of: - Philip II (Filippo II or Felipe II) - 1556-1598 - Philip III - 1598-1621 - Philip IV - 1621-1665 If you want a silver coin, you can try a crown like an 'Scudo d'argento', a 'Ducatone' or even a 'Filippo'. And as @Pertinax ask, i'll show you an example from my collection. This one is a silver 'Ducatone':   Year: 1630 Ruler: Philip IV Mint: Milano Weight: 31.61g Diameter: About 41mm On observe: PHILIPPVS·IIII·REX·HISPAN (Philip IV hispanic king) On reverse: MEDIOLANI·DVX·ETC (Duke of Mediolani, etc) Mediolani was the name of Milano under Roman Empire domination. Etc was used because Hispanic kings had a long list of titles, so they used etcetera. |

Thanks for all the advice about coins that would cover Brescia around 1600. I checked out the Spanish coins and a few others (Venice), but the good ones were more than I was hoping to spend. So in the end I bought a German coin. Most of the early firearms made in Brescia were actually purchased for use further north - The Holy Roman Empire (many were used in the 30 Years' war), the Low Countries and some made their way to England where they saw active use in the English Civil War. So, I decided on a German coin since it would have been quite possible that this could have been where the pistol actually ended up.
