no such thing as a 1931 dollar, I think you meant 1936 dollar and 1931 50 cent.
the 1931 50 cent has some value (a lot more than the dollar), depending on the grade and extent of "hairlines" you may have done ok.
really need pictures in order to help you further, but will say this... if you aren't sure of what you are buying - then don't buy it. or at least start with stuff worth 75 cents instead of $75 dollars.
