1943 P Copper Coated Wheat Cent - Possible Tin?

Pennylady Valued Member United States 75 Posts	Posted 01/22/2020 12:30 pm So I have had this coins for several years and used it to show people what to look for when in a authentic 1943 Copper Cent. Well now I am scratching my head concerning the grey metal showing on some of the high spots. This metal has never changed color and is the same as the day I found it. From what I understand these areas should show sighns of rust or at least have started by now. It prompted me to seach google for counterfeits, almost all of them show some deterioration, lifting and RUST. I just recently heard about am exspermintal planchet and now it has me wondering. It is of normal thickness and the weight os exactly 2.7gm. This was in a 5000 count bag I bought from a coin dealer, who said he bought thd bag from a auction. I know the chances of finding something so rare is rare in its self, but what if? Report this Post to the Staff

tropicalbats Pillar of the Community United States 6108 Posts	Posted 01/22/2020 2:01 pm A lot of the 1943 steel cents have been plated with copper over the years. The weight of yours strongly suggests this was done to your coin. If it is attracted to a magnet, then you can be sure this is the case. These are fairly common, but are a bit collectible and generally get a couple dollars at auction as a novelty so it's worth keeping separate. Report this Post to the Staff

With a weight of 2.7 suggesteding its a copper plated steel cent, what would a 1943 copper plated exspermintal cent weight? Report this Post to the Staff
Petespockets55 Pillar of the Community United States 5772 Posts	Posted 01/22/2020 4:09 pm It looks like the zinc coating showing through a copper plating that was applied after it left the mint. If you are convinced it is an authentic experimental alloy cent there really isn't a way for us to validate it online. I'm not sure who could do that for you but it would probably cost $ for an in-hand review. Being magnetic indicates it is a regular 1943 steel cent that someone coated with copper (electrolysis most likely). Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups.
