How to decide if a coin is worth grading?
Answer:
1. Grade the coin for yourself.
If you don't know how to grade, post a picture here in the CCF, and let us grade it for you.
2. Decide on the grading information you have received here, or have done for yourself, and look up the value according to grade in any of the recognized coin catalogs.
3. As a rule of thumb, if the value is less than $100, the cost of the grading and shipping fees is not justified.
4. The decision is made more easily, but that is still up to you.

Some of my coins are potentially valued at $thousands, but I really like to grade for myself, and slabs would be a very awkward inclusion in my collection.
Therefore, none of my coins are slabbed.
Fortunately, I have some highly professional numismatic specialist friends, who can authenticate any coin for which I may have some doubt. They have even authenticated museum coins.
Also worthy to note that museums never grade and slab their coins. One of the reasons, I guess, is that slabbing would severely interfere with how museum coins are displayed and stored.
Museums never value their coins.
They usually have the expertise to authenticate any and all of their coins.
