i am probably going to sound stupid for asking this, but in my whitman classic folder, in the 1955 to 1958-D section, there are 2 slots labeled "varieties". Are these for any specific varieties, 1950s varieties, or just random varieties?

Hi Yes, the 55/55 DDO for one. Plus any others you come across. Maybe you'll get real lucky on the 55/55 and fill both slots and have one left over for. :)

well thats what I would think, but it also has another slot for the 55/55 DDO. I'll just put the other ones in there. Thanks a ton!

you could add a couple of Doubled dies or re-punched mintmarks in those slots.

The holes are just extras because of the way the pages were designed, which was long before they knew the wheat cents would end. They are not meant for anything specific, so put anything you like in there.

Your book may be from 1996, but the layout was established a long time ago. The way these things are made, having one of the pages made with two fewer holes would severely alter mass production. (The pages are punched first, then printed and assembled later) The Lincoln Wheat cent is not the only collection affected, and Whitman is not the only manufacturer. My Eisenhower dollar and Franklin half dollar Dansco Albums have extra holes on the last page (four and five extra holes respectively). I just put my own "variety" choices in there and called it a day!

I know that all albums have holes for varieties, it's just that the Whitman ones are right in the middle.

In the middle? Ah, now I unnderstand your perplexity! It is not really that odd if you think about it... There is a "natural break" between wheats and memorials. There are people that just collect the wheats, people that collect just the memorials, and people that collect both. To serve the customer, there are different versions of these albums that are all based on a master layout. You have to look at it from a least-cost manufacturing standpoint. The Full Lincoln Album is the combination of a Wheat and Memorial album. The natural break is there, and you end up with extra holes in the middle of an album that has both wheats and memorials. My Dansco does the same thing; in that case there are actually THREE extra holes on the last wheat page, and the memorials start on their own page.
