1988 Nickel Machine Damage - Coin Community Forum

malibu Valued Member Canada 304 Posts	Posted 10/15/2008 12:04 pm I found this damaged nickel in 25,000 nickels I recently went through. I showed it to the trained RCM personnel in Winnipeg and they had no idea what might have caused it. They suggested I consult a coin dealer. It appears to be post-production, i.e. not a damaged blank or planchet. Any ideas what might have caused this? *Edited to fix images* Report this Post to the Staff

Someone probably tried to cut it in half with tin snips or metal shears and gave up when they realized how hard nickel is Report this Post to the Staff

WpgLwr Pillar of the Community Canada 1082 Posts	Posted 11/03/2008 08:28 am Looks to me like it was caused by a tool called a box pan brake, which is a huge tin cutter used mostly by guys who make duct work. I remember we had one in shop class back in high school, and guys were forever cutting coins in half. This one looks like it was merely cut into instead of being cut in half.
