I've collected in many categories over the years, and just got back to coins. How is the hobby doing? Is it growing, as new folks join? Or is it considered elitist, boring, and mostly for old single guys sitting at home in the basement...

I think the hobby is very much alive and well and new collectors are coming around in good numbers. Maybe because of some of the recent US coin designs. Prices generally seem to me to be doing fine rising at steady rates overall. Some of the early coins have really taken off in price. I've noticed that Half Cents, Large cents, 20 cent pieces and almost all of the nickels have really jumped up in price over the past 10 or 15 years. I sure regret having sold off a lot of these in the late 1980's. Just my opinion. WELCOME BACK!

Coin collecting is what you make of it--just like anything in life. I resumed collecting recently, and have found it intellectually stimulating and good fun--while meeting some great people too.

Since the advent of the internet The hobby has "exploded" as compared to past years.
As an Australian collector, I can now locate coins around the world from the comfort of my home.
I have even managed to purchase a few Canadian coins.
The Internet has also allowed for some shameless deals to take place as well but now the hobby is full of men women and children.
an it has brought collectors together in such places as this forum to learn from each other and each others mistakes.
Happy collecting.

There are many of us who only collect, becaues we enjoy the hobby. Others use it for a second income, later it becomes the primary ioncome. I personally have never sold a coin, but have bought MANY! There comes a time when one needs to "find something to do", beside sitting in a rocking-chair, and slowly going away. I have collected for many years, and different types, many have been sold to "feed the kids", and I have never been sorry I had to part with the collections. They went for a good reason. I have found many good friends, doing such, and will consider them as much of my "hobby", as the collection I have amassed. Nothing great, but to me, lots of fun, and learning! Some day, I hope one of my heirs will get the same enjoyment out of what I have enjoyed for so many yars. Dick

Welcome on-board antiquesgary! Coin collecting is said to be the Hobby of Kings! Perhaps named that way because the longer your in it the more money it soaks outta ya. I started this hobby when I was 13 back in the early 70's. After 2 kids and now in my 40's , I was tired of sitting down and watching C.N.N. every night after work for 4 hours. As a result of doing some soul searching on which hobby to start up, this Baby Boomer came up with the idea of revitalizing a child hood hobby. I became a reborn numismatist, however, now I get to play with the real good stuff, now that I have the budget to do it. If you want some quick hints on the hobby, buy slabbed coins, (it's the latest trend)buy the KEY dates first and the highest grades you can afford, stay away from problem coins, they lose value and are very difficult to sell. Good luck and welcome back.....................Glenn
