it is either sitting on another coin, or it has a seek on the side.

Does it look like a proof? (all Half Cents from 1840 to 1848 were proof only. The 1849 small dates were proof only as well)

the pics in the link were my only info as to whether it was a proof or not. Pretty rare coin if real

It has the 50s or late reverse (small, long berries) but it's not a proof, the edge is wacky, and the obverse markers don't match either the proof or proof restrikes. (cf. curl above 8 should be just left of the left inside curve of the 8 but on this spurious coin it is centered above the 8.)

My guess is counterfeit, possibly a "cabinet counterfeit" made for collectors many years ago. It might also be an 1847 Large Cent obverse which has been married to a flattened and enlarged Half Cent reverse, which might explain the odd rims. If someone has time and inclination they might be able to match the obverse to an 1847 Newcomb variety to prove or disprove that theory.

Thanks paralyse. Thought it looked suspect so I didn't bid.

My point, which clearly didn't come through well, was that it obviously wasn't a proof coin.

I went ahead and looked at the varieties for the year and I can prove its a fake. There was only one obv die for the year and on it the point of the curl is between the outer and inner left hand curves of the 8. On the ebay coin
1847-Half-Cent--Real-Or-Fake?
It is over the center of the 8.
