I was wondering if by seeing an auction catalog you find an item that really interested you and you are ready to make a good offer about it before the auction . Do auction houses accepts to receive pre auction offer?

I think some will be open to an offer if it is made before there are any bids.

Send an e-mail. It can't hurt.

Once a catalog is printed and distributed, it is very unlikely that offers will be entertained ahead of the auction. Such activity could damage the reputation of the auction house.

Exceptions might be made at smaller/local auction houses, but if the item is one that is expected to generate a good number of bids it would not be a good candidate for a pre-auction offer exception.

People can make all the offers they want - that's just freedom of speech. But, as the person making the sale, you can't withdraw an item from auction after its registered but before bidding starts. Any auction house would show you the door if you did that.

Coin Auctions withdraw lots all the time for many reasons .
Check any GB Coin Auctions and there will be sale room notices and withdrawals .
As to an offer at auction just being Freedom of Speech , sorry a bid or offer if successful
is a binding contract and enforceable by the auction firm under Common Law .

@Pacificoin: Hmm - that's news to me... So if a coin is in an active auction at Heritage or Geoffrey Bell or ebay for that matter, I can email the person who is selling it, make an offer, and they can cut bidding short?

It is an internet only auction for a well known auction house. I've contacted them and they said that they never accept offers before auctions.

I agree with @baseball.

CERTAINLY it is true with ebay.

Good point ... ebay never prints and distributes ... nor do a vast number of e-auction sites. Thereby conferring more flexibility?

While it is a good venue to look at ebay shouldn't be considered an auction house. ebay essentially never takes possession of an item and runs the listing themselves and buyers can retract bids and basically not pay for things at will. If you didn't pay for an item at Hertiage/Legend/Stacks or tried to retract a bid/not pay a buyer at best would be banned and may be facing a lawsuit. That extra freedom and lack of control for buyers on ebay also means sellers can end listings and cancel things as well.

Most of the auction houses don't offer returns either or if they do it's in a very limited capacity with a very limited amount, not the unlimited amount ebay allows.

It's really just an apples and oranges thing.

I was thinking of an auction platform called onebid that's used by a number of Polish auction houses. I have seen lots get listed then removed there. I've guessed it was either the lot had been removed for the OP's reason, or there had been an authenticity issue, but I'm not sure which.
