Just won an ebay auction for 182 dateless buffalo's for $29. If I did the math correctly, that's .16 each! I plan on restoring the dates. Last batch I did okay with a 1914-D, 1919-D, 1913-S ty.2, 1915-S to name a few. Highly unlikely of 16/16 or 18/7-D but you never know. That's the fun part. For those who have never restored buffalo's, highly recommend. swcoin.ecrater.com

Sounds fun. What's the method used in the restoration of these dates?

Could you possible put up a picture of a restored date buffalo. I am curious as to how they come out. Thanks.

It's called Nic-A-Date. I put one small drop on the dateless area, wait about 10-15 seconds and the date starts appearing. It works on the principal of dissolving a small portion of metal on the coins surface thus exposing the date and mintmark if desired. It's like an acid I'm guessing. Rinse under water and wipe with a clean rag and your done.

cabomhn, they come out pretty good. You can tell they have been restored but it does expose the all important date. I will try to put one up in this thread so you can compare before and after.

WOW! thats really neat! I didnt know they even made anything like that to restore the dates. So at .16 each and then restored you have made a very good deal. Is it really hard to keep the chemical on just the date area? Can you post more as you go along?

are there any really rare Buffalo nickels? I have a small stash but have never really learned if there are varieties to look for or what the key dates are

The 1918/7-D or 1918 over 7-D, 1916 Double Die Obverse, 1937 3-legged variety caused by over polished dies, 1914/3. There are also semi-key dates to look for: 1913-S ty.2,1914-D,1921-S,1926-S and others. These are the good ones to look for.

The date area looks really nice on that '21s! Is there any problem with trading or selling restored date nickels? Do those keys and semi-keys with restored dates have a value guide?

Nice find murty! There is a market for the keys and semi-keys. They are sold at reduced prices obviously because of the "acid treatment". The common dates can be sold as well to fill holes or to complete sets. Usually these are FR-G coins and the only area affected will be the date area because of the restoration.

I have had luck with finding key restored buffalo's. Have 1918/7 d,1914-d 1914-s,and many others in the teens with mint marks. No luck with 1913 mm's though. I have been offered $150 for the 18/7-d,but thought I would hold it at that price. I still have a few more undated coins to go through. Murty

. I would love to find a 18/7-D in this batch of 182! We shall see. I already have a PCGS VG10 example so if I did, I would sell it to someone who needs one. I would like to see a picture of yours. Being offered $150 IMO, is a definite hold at that price!. A minimum I would sell that coin for with Good details would be $350. AG details, $250. These sell regularly for these prices.
