I had the idea to put circulated banknotes into water and to press them dry under a heavy weight to get them plain and smooth like you do it with stamps.

Unfortunately, that wasn't a good idea. These banknotes are smooth now, but there are also large fluorescence areas on some of these banknotes now (probably coming from the security ink). You can't see that with your naked eye but under UV light only.

Might there be a chance to get rid of these spots?

I don't have any before pics, but there are two after pics.
They are made under a UV lamp. They look great under a normal lamp.

Thank you for the pics. Sorry I can't help,but the general rule about do not clean coins also goes for currency and stamps.

-there's nothing you can do about your washed/pressed notes now. Maybe you can spend them?
