Ballyhoo Pillar of the Community United States 1613 Posts	Posted 02/10/2020 7:09 pm Welcome. The term "red" refers to a copper coin which exhibits vibrant red/orange color on both sides. Only uncirculated, or mint state as they are called, coins are classified as such. As to a higher value, this is generally the rule as most collectors seek out only those designated red. Note that common, high mintage specimens only see a slight increase over brown/red brown while key dates have a much higher value comparatively. Some well-circulated wheat cents can be found with a dull/matte brick red appearance--not to be confused with the mint state 'red' term. Gotta see a pic or two. Report this Post to the Staff
