2000 Massachusetts ATB Quarter Die Break

If you are talking about the the line that connects to the rim, that is a die crack. A die break would be a lot larger What is the difference? A die crack is a thin line on a die:

Note the die on the left in the back. Note the line line showing the die crack. This incuse mark on the die will leave a raised line on the coins struck with this die.

Then note the simulated die in front of that die image. Note the area edited to show a chip away from the gutter area that forms the rim?


That will leave what is called a rim Cud. Because the mark is lower than the gutter line, the rim Cud will extend above the rim on that area of coins struck with that die.
Then note the die on the right? An area is missing from the outside edge of the die. This will leave a Cud on the coins struck with this die.

So why will this leave a raised area on the coins struck with these dies? The missing areas on the die are voids. So when coins are struck, this void fills in and leave a higher area than the rest of the coins designs. The lack of metal will also leave a weakened area when more metal flows into the coin. Thus weakness will show.

But lets say where the die crack is that small areas of the die starts chipping away, Then that area will leave a raised chip.



Either on a die crack or on any areas near the fields or on the designs. The voids like to fill because of the path of least resistance. Then when enough the metal breaks away off the die the void gets larger and then becomes a die break.

This is marked as a chip, but is actually a die break because of the metal now missing from the die.
