There's no link for that lot at the StacksBowers site yet, so there aren't any pictures.

Guessing they're referring to the Trade dollar. The '85 Morgan is common as dirt even in high grades.

Yep. But what do you define as high? For me a "high grade" Morgan is MS-67, relative rarity ignored.

PCGS lists a MS-68 1885 Morgan at $22,500. While that's a lot of money that's no $2 million. A MS-67 is listed at only $2500.

The auction is for a Trade dollar, not a Morgan. From the article (which does have pictures):

Quote:
"While the Mint had ended production of circulation-strike Trade dollars in 1878, Proof examples were officially distributed in Proof sets through 1883," explained auction house Stack's Bowers Galleries in a statement. "Additional Proof examples were struck at the beginning of 1884, but were never distributed and all but 10 were eventually melted. It is believed that a similar situation occurred in 1885, leaving just five examples of that date for collectors today."

I do think the title of this post should reflect the fact that it is the Trade dollar, so we don't get an influx of collectors posting their slider 1885 Morgans thinking they're gonna be millionaires.

Yep. Those ultra high grades go for a ton. You can see the drop in price due to amount available. You can get a 67 for ~$500-600. Not rare by any means. A 68 though.... different ball game. I paid 1k for my 67, but it's a heckuva toner.
