erafjel Pillar of the Community Sweden 2124 Posts	Posted 02/15/2020 10:05 am So, this should be a Pepin le Bref, minted 755-68 in Quentovic (near today's Pas-de-Calais) as per the inscription QVCCI/VVIC. It is one of the more common Pepin le Bref coins - or perhaps "less unusual" is a better characterization for a coin that is still worth a couple of 1000 $. If genuine, that is... About genuinity: Well, perhaps. The weight is low, but not too low. Overall the design elements look kind of ok, but in my eyes they are a little thinner than on other examples and also a bit "rough". The granulated surface looks a little strange, I don't see that on other Carolingian coins. Not enough for me to say "not genuine" but I am a bit doubtful, as this example has some differences in appearance compared to other examples from the same mint. Report this Post to the Staff

Also, you might consider getting an XRF analysis to confirm that there are some impurities in with the silver. On ebay for example one can find a lot of these fakes that are being sold as genuine. I know mines are guinine because they were my own metal detecting finds. But buying one is always tricky.
