Searching through the coin jar, I found a unique looking quarter. I made a post about this about a year ago, but to no avail. As you can see the obverse of the coin is in its intended condition, but it's a different story for the reverse. There is some weird texture that affects all of the devices portrayed on it. I honestly don't even know where to begin on the investigation of its cause. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It may have been exposed to a mild acid, like a soda/coffee for a time? While it looks different, it maybe a stain? No premium for it though. PSD.

To be quite honest, the photos that I took do no justice in respects to the appearance of the texture; they're taken by a cell phone after all. I've seen what acid etching looks like and I don't think that's the case here. It looks almost like rounded waves. If that makes any sense. It also still has its luster, which wouldn't be present in the case it was exposed to acid. And why would it only have it on the reverse?

Well the added layer of metal on the center copper coin may have been slight defective. It may have been heated and altered that way. But not a know error from the mint. Still altered after being struck.

Is the coin in a 2x2? it looks like it is. If so,remove it and take new pics then post them.

I see, that makes sense. Just trying to learn from every odd encounter from this oddly complex hobby! Thank you!

Well, sadly I am not home and won't be for a while. I am currently stationed in Camp Lejeune. I can assure you though that there isn't any glare from the 2x2 that interferes with the presentation of the coin.

I've never seen a coin quite like that. Interesting that the pattern at the left runs parallel to the rim. BTW, why is the gunk at 2 o'clock visible in one reverse photo but not the other?

Two different coins I'd guess.

The pictures are of the same coin. I'm not too sure what the gunk is, I belive I used a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol to see if it would come off.
