what is the difference between the type1 and the type2? clad and silver? thank you

You need to be more specific with years. There are Type-1 and Type-2 S mint marks for the 1979 and 1981 proofs and there are also Type-A Rev and Type-B Rev for some of the pre-65 silver issues.

biochemist, or anyone else, do you have pictures of the type 1 vs the type 2 and the type a & b?

I do not have pics of the mint marks for Washington quarters but I do have a link for the mint marks on the SBAs for those years- the same mint mark punches were used for all the denominations http://www.smalldollars.com/dollar/page29.html

As for the Type A and B reverses, the Type B is a proof reverse used on business strikes from 1956(?)-64. The main pick-up point the is ES in STATES on the reverse- on a normal Type A rev, the ES are touching but they are separated on the Type B(similar effect as seen on the close and Wide AM Lincolns)

the ones in question are the 79-81 proofs, what is the difference?

Look in my post above you for the link on SBA dollars- they used the same mint marks as the quarters and that link has nice pics.
