This is a British cartwheel penny of 1797 in the name of George III. Legends say: GEORGIUS III D(ei) G(ratia) REX and on the other side: BRITTANNIA. It must have a diameter of 36 mm and a weight of 28,3 gram, being a full ounce of copper. So, as it was rather heavy and big, this coin was used more as a kitchen weight than as a coin.
There's also a 2 pence cartwheel, 41 mm diameter and weighing 2 ounces of copper (56,6 gram)
These coins were struck by Matthew Boulton at the Soho Mint, Birmingham.

G'day, there are several threads on CCF in the last year or so about 1797 pennies & twopences. They contain a lot of information, and some pics of some really superb examples. Peter in Oz

Nice coin, I found one years ago while metal detecting in Bermuda.
Not much value, but very neat coin.

Just a small point. Britannia has one T and 2 Ns. Unlike Brittany which has 2 Ts and 1 N.

It's lower grade but at least it has a pleasing look. Well acquired and welcome to CoinCommunity!

I have also found plenty of these whilst metal detecting in Scotland - I think they wore out the pockets easily!
